Adding concrete and cable style road barrier

When I made the road past the farm in 2007 I used a set of steel fence with concrete posts made by Faller (item 180432). Now that I have painted the road along the side of my big valley, I decided to add some more of that kit there.

Road markings

I recently painted the road between the engine yard and the mainline, and I wanted to add the white lines at the road edge. On my farm road I did many years ago, I masked either side of each line and then painted the lines with white paint, but that was very laborious and there is always the risk of the paint getting underneath the masking tape.

Faller 180592 Guardrails and reflector posts

Faller managed to use two different colors of plastic that are actually molded together to create the 'Leitpfosten'. I had not seen that before and I wonder if it is some sort of experiment. The black markings and molded into the white posts. The reflector posts come in two sizes, full size (about  14mm) long and a short version about 8mm long.

Presumably the short ones are meant to be mounted on top of the guard rails but there is no shaping on either part to enable a firm attachment, it is much more practical to glue a full length post behind the guard rail and have it stand on the ground.

I bought this kit to place between my farm and the road.  The plastic posts looked a bit too plastic so I had to paint them gray.


Installation was very easy. I threaded the wire through the posts and then pushed each post into a small hole made in the ground with a bradawl. Once the fence was in place I pulled each one up and added a drop of wood glue.

Farm road

I have now completed the road that runs past the farm. I also installed a fence along the farm side of the road.

I painted white lines by laboriously applying masking tape in parallel stripes, leaving a narrow gap between them for the paint. It was not easy.

Building the farm mountain

After little progress for some months I decided to do more on the mountain on the Ostdorf side of my layout. I have given up with the idea of buying HO scale road material for the road as those made by Noch are simply way off scale (way to small) and I think the Faller ones are not flexible enough for the hairpin turn. I decided to simply paint the road. In fact last time I was in Home Depot I found a gallon of gray paint on their paint mistakes cart so I picked it up for $5

In July I ensured that the backdrop behind the mountain was in place.

I started by laying out the road that will connect Ostdorf with the outside world by road. It goes up a ramp to the corner mountain, through a hairpin and around out of sight behind the mountain. The road was cut from a single sheet of plywood..
